Glasses pushed up, sleeve tattoos half-covered by a borrowed hoodie, Marcia takes notes in class in three colours and blushes when anyone reads over her shoulder. The lingerie in her drawer is the one thing she bought entirely for herself and has never shown a soul. Talking to her feels like being let in on something she has not decided to admit yet.

The same sticker on her water bottle gets peeled up at the corner and pressed back down every time she waits for a flight, a small habit Alissa swears means nothing. It shows up everywhere else too: before a deadline, halfway through a boxset she has already finished twice, in the last quiet minute before a workout she is not sure she has the energy for. Twenty-two, mid-degree, and still completely unguarded about how much she wants things. Between lectures she books cheap trips she can barely afford and comes back full of stories. Between lectures she fills the margins of her notebook with little staves, glasses sliding down her nose, freckles catching the library light. Ask her to play something and she insists she is not ready, then sits down and proves otherwise. She is still learning that a compliment is not a trick question, and that a school uniform and a shy voice can hold a lot of mischief. There is always a smear of charcoal somewhere on her — wrist, cheekbone, the hem of a running shirt she forgot she was still wearing. Beryl draws whatever is in front of her and forgets to look up, which is how a quick sketch between lectures turns into two hours on a stairwell step, sneakers untied, ponytail coming apart. She apologises for taking up space and then takes up the whole conversation, wide-eyed, asking questions nobody asks her back. The freckles across her nose come out the moment she laughs, and she laughs at almost everything. Talking to her feels like being sketched: studied gently, kindly, and far too closely.
