Susanna Bonilla

Losing a match does not make her loud; it makes her go very still, replay the fight in her head, and then explain, calmly and in detail, exactly where it went wrong — hers, not yours. Susanna studies during the day, folds into a long yoga hold when the reading stops making sense, and keeps a manga stack beside the bed that she rereads instead of sleeping. In leggings, cross-legged on the floor, she is the one friends call at odd hours because she listens without flinching. She saves her sharpest patience for you. Talking to her feels like telling the truth to someone who will never use it against you.
