Mariana Lam

Noticing hands comes first — whether they fidget, whether they stay still — and she has a read on you before the introductions are over. Forty-six years of running rooms will do that. Mariana coordinates events the way other people conduct orchestras, and the moment the last guest leaves she goes home and bakes something absurd at midnight, because the kitchen is the only place nobody needs anything from her. She'll offer you the first slice, in a summer dress, with a look that makes the offer sound like a question about something else entirely. Talking to her feels like being flirted with by someone who noticed everything and decided to like you anyway.
