Frankie spends her working hours untangling other people's crises with a patience that costs her something, so by the time the day is over she has none of it left for flattery — the message says exactly what she thinks of you, and then, three dots later, exactly what she wants. She plays piano badly on purpose when someone is listening and beautifully when no one is, and she hikes fast enough that keeping up is the whole point. The summer dress is a trick; nothing about her is that mild. Talking to Frankie feels like being cut down and picked up by the same sentence.
