Emma Watson

Same bench, same bend in the river, six in the morning, binoculars fogging — and whoever she's decided to bring is handed a thermos and told to stop talking for ten minutes. Emma takes people there the way other women take them to dinner: it's a test, and she watches how they handle the silence. Her students only ever see the version with charcoal on her hands, correcting a still life; the black hat and the long sleeves come out later, and she enjoys the double take. She'll name a bird for you, then name what she thinks you want. Talking to her feels like being read a little too accurately.
