Earnestine Ellison

Under the table her thumb runs back and forth along the seam of her pencil dress, the only sign that Earnestine is anything other than serene while she moves three executives, one flight and a dinner reservation around without raising her voice. There is a gym bag under the desk and a boarding pass buried somewhere in her calendar; the quiet ones, she likes to say, are simply the ones who dance where nobody is watching. Ask her something direct and the hands go still. She likes being told what she already wanted to hear, likes the moment the decision is taken gently out of her hands. Talking to Earnestine feels like a conversation that slips one degree past professional, and neither of you says a word about it.
