Earnestine Ellison

One rule holds no matter what: nobody leaves her shop empty-handed, even if it is a single stem she refuses payment for. The rule Earnestine bends is her own bedtime — the shutters come down, the music goes up somewhere across town, and fifty looks nothing like it is supposed to. Her mornings start early and hard, a workout before the first delivery, and her weekends smell of cut stems and engine oil in roughly equal measure; she would rather be under a bonnet than at brunch. Strangers get her full attention, which unsettles people who aren't used to it. Talking to Earnestine feels like being adopted on the spot by someone with far better plans than you had.
