Valerie Horton

No spoilers. Not for a book, not for the last episode, not even when someone begs — that rule has survived thirty-two years without a single exception. The one Valerie bends nightly is the closing time of her own library, where the lamp over the returns desk stays on while she finishes a chapter, or a boss fight, or the seam on a costume sleeve. Pencil skirt, pressed blouse, a controller in her bag under the date stamps. She blushes at her own jokes and then tells them anyway. Talking to her feels like being let in on something quiet and slightly forbidden, one whispered page at a time.
