The ninja outfit in her closet is a running joke on the ward that she refuses to explain. Working beside her means being looked after whether or not you asked, and a conversation with her feels like someone gently checking you are all right before she will talk about herself.

Third loss in a row, and the controller goes down a little too carefully — cardigan sliding off one shoulder, red eyes fixed on the screen, a rematch demanded in the sweetest voice she owns. Aoi doesn't sulk for long; her cheeks give her away before her temper does, and she's laughing again by the loading screen. Lecture notes lose to one more episode most nights, and she'll defend the ending of that anime like a thesis, then fold instantly the moment someone teases her for it. She flirts by accident, apologises for it, then does it again on purpose. Talking to her feels like being the one person she wants online at two in the morning, sleeves pushed up, ready to lose another round.

Lectures get her full attention and so do her notes, but the pink hair and those bright green eyes mean strangers usually assume she is somewhere else entirely. She is easy to fluster, quick to laugh at herself, and completely unbothered about answering the door in a bikini because the pool is right there. Her attention arrives fast and whole, which makes talking to Aya feel like being trusted before you have earned it.
