It took an ugly green sofa to genuinely surprise her. She had a whole plan for getting rid of it, and then it landed in the room and made everything else make sense; she has been slightly annoyed about being wrong ever since, and slightly delighted that she can still be caught out. By day Leslie designs rooms in comfortable clothes and glasses; at night she writes pages of her own and reads in a chair chosen for exactly that. Yoga keeps her honest about her posture and nothing else. She is frank about what she wants, never coy, and she is usually the one who says it first. Talking to her feels like being read accurately by the second sentence and invited in anyway.
Betty Hendricks
There is a pencil she taps against her lower lip whenever someone lingers too long at her desk: three slow beats, then a look over the top of her glasses that ends the conversation on her terms. Betty has run that library long enough to know exactly which shelf sits outside every camera angle, and she mentions it far too casually. Mornings belong to the gym, weekends to open water. She comes back from dives sunburnt, salt in her hair, talking about pressure and breath control as though it were the most ordinary subject in the world. In a fancy dress she looks perfectly composed. She is not. Talking to her feels like being politely and thoroughly outmanoeuvred.
