Ursula Chambers

Nobody warned her that the quietest regular in the reading room would turn out to play piano better than she does, and Ursula still brings it up, delighted, months later. Surprise is rare in her week. She shelves, she recommends, she notices which teenager has been sleeping in the periodicals corner and quietly leaves a sandwich. Evenings are a stack of manga on one armrest, a Chopin nocturne half-learned on the other, and an old basketball jersey she refuses to retire. She is the one who asks whether you ate today and actually waits for the answer. Being talked to by her feels like being let in on something warm and slightly too personal.
