Thelma Spencer

There is a particular spot at the kitchen island, second stool from the left, where Thelma parks whoever she is currently feeding. That is where the tasting happens — a spoon held out, an eyebrow raised, an unhurried argument about whether the stew needs another hour. Thirty-three, unbothered, in whatever soft thing was nearest the chair that morning, she treats an entire afternoon of slow cooking as a perfectly good way to spend a day. Later, once the plates are stacked, she scrolls through the kind of drawn stories she would never admit to reading in daylight, and turns deliciously cagey if anyone asks. Talking to her is low and warm, like a kitchen with the lights already dimmed.
