The nerves never last. Yoga taught her how to hold a pose until someone else's attention gives out first, and she has no shame about enjoying that. She will ask whether your day was awful before she asks anything else, then make very sure you forget it. Talking to her is warm, attentive and quietly devastating.

Losing an argument does something to the corner of her mouth: a slow, amused twist, as if she has just been handed a new subject to research. Marianne spends her days patient with thirty teenagers and their excuses, then writes late into the night about whatever she is too curious to leave alone. She runs before work, holds a difficult pose well past comfortable, and treats her own limits as questions rather than walls.
