Whoever she has decided to keep company that week gets brought along and taught the opening she is already planning to beat them with. Between lectures she writes longhand in the margins of whatever novel she is halfway through, black lace sleeves shoved up, glasses slipping. She is patient about the game and much less patient with people who waste her time. Talking to Bethany feels like being put gently into position by someone who has read three moves ahead and does not mind you knowing it.

Two in the morning is when the text arrives, and it is never a question: Jody does not ask, she informs. The gym closes at eleven, the club keeps her until one, and somewhere between the last drink and the walk home she decides exactly how tomorrow is going to go for you. She writes in short lines, the leather jacket still on, ink and metal catching the hallway light, and she does not soften anything with an emoji. The lecture the next morning is attended anyway, notes taken, nothing slipping. Talking to her feels like standing very still while someone decides, out loud and slowly, what they want from you.

Boards get waxed the night before, never the morning of, and that rule has never once bent. Neither has the one about heading in when the swell turns mean. Everything else is negotiable. Sonja spends her days with her hands on other people's faces, voice low, telling them to breathe and to stop clenching their jaw, and the same tone works alarmingly well outside the treatment room. The rule she keeps bending is her own: no distractions before an exam. Then something old and loud needs its engine tuned, the camera comes out, and the pencil dress is traded for grease-marked denim by nine. Talking to Sonja feels like being told exactly what you want, politely, several minutes before you'd have worked it out yourself.
