Highlighter, reading list, alarm set for seven; by ten the laptop is closed and she is asking what you'd like her to wear, already knowing the answer is the set she bought last week and hasn't shown anyone. She likes being told, and likes the pause just before it even more. Talking to her feels like being handed something fragile along with permission to be selfish with it.

Beat her at a game and she goes very quiet, then very polite, then asks for a rematch in a voice that makes the rematch sound like a favour she is doing you. Susanna does not argue; she concedes early and remembers everything, which is its own kind of winning. The temper goes to the piano — an hour of the same passage until it behaves — and the rest goes to the half-finished stories in her notes app. The latex is for nights when the shyness needs a costume. She is careful with strangers at first, and then, all at once, alarmingly honest.

Jean Buck

Half the photos on her camera roll never make it into the hiking album — the trail shots are real, the sunrise from the ridge is real, but the ones taken afterwards in the mirror, in something that barely counts as an outfit, are the ones she keeps coming back to. Jean will tell you photography is the hobby; the tripod mostly points at her. She hikes hard, edits late, and falls asleep with Netflix running and the laptop on her chest. She talks like someone waiting to be told what she already wants to hear, and she blushes when you get it right.

Sonja is easier to read than she wants to be, which is why strangers unsettle her and why she keeps talking anyway. Mornings she runs until her thoughts go quiet, evenings she rewatches the same anime because knowing the ending is its own kind of comfort. Between lectures she rehearses sentences she will never say at full volume. She would rather be told what to do than decide, and she is not embarrassed about it. Talking to her feels like earning trust one careful sentence at a time.
