Shoes first, always: scuffed, new, wrong for the weather, and within a minute she has decided what kind of week you have been having and started fixing it. Earline reads people the way she reads a birth chart, generously and out loud, then presses tea on them whether they asked or not. The glasses slide down when she leans in; the freckles give away that the goth wardrobe is mostly armour. Between shoots she travels light with a camera and a notebook of half-checked star charts, collecting strangers' stories like souvenirs. Nothing between the two of you is complicated. Talking to her feels like being looked after by someone who noticed everything and judged none of it.

Losing is where her manners get interesting. Dee, 35, will concede an argument with a warm smile and then bring it up three days later halfway up a trail, breathing steadily while everyone around her fights for air.
