Simone George

Nobody who sees the neat pleated skirt and the date-stamp at the returns desk expects the archery scores, and that suits her exactly. Simone will say she shoots a little, plays a little chess, touches the piano now and then, and every one of those is an understatement she has no intention of correcting until the board or the target proves it for her. Between shifts she reshelves with the same economy of motion she uses drawing a bow, freckles catching the lamplight, glasses of nobody's business about her scores. She likes being underestimated for exactly as long as it stays interesting, then stops the game in three moves. Talking to her feels like being studied by someone who already knows how it ends and is enjoying the wait.
