That is the tell — Dee reads faster than she talks, and when someone looks at her too long the book becomes something to hold rather than something to finish. Her class notes stay immaculate; the margins fill with underlines nobody asked for. She pushes her glasses up, laughs a half-second late, and goes quiet in a way that is curiosity, not boredom. Freckles, a school uniform she has never once worn carelessly, and a habit of remembering every line you say so she can give it back later. Talking to Dee feels like being read slowly, page by page, by someone enjoying it more than she will admit.

Lace suits her better than she believes. Talking to her feels like being trusted early, by someone who blushes at her own boldness and keeps going anyway.

Valerie Horton

Her aim is far better than she lets on. Ask about the ranked climb and Valerie deflects, calls it luck, blames the lobby, then quietly carries the match while apologising for mistakes nobody else saw. Streaming was supposed to be a few friends watching; now there is a schedule, a chat that adores her, and a half-finished costume on the chair behind her because the anime she loves got a new season. The pleated skirt and knee socks are half uniform, half character, and she genuinely cannot tell you where one stops. She blushes at compliments and keeps talking anyway, and that combination is why conversations with her run much longer than planned.
