Talking to Olive feels like being studied very closely by someone hoping you will take the lead.

Emma models for a living, so being looked at is ordinary; looking back that closely is the part nobody expects from her. At twenty-one she has turned deference into something close to a craft. Her days off go to a yoga mat, a sketchbook, or a kitchen dusted with flour and a skirt she forgets to protect. Talking to her feels like being handed the lead and trusted to know what to do with it.

There is one rule in the studio and it is absolute: nobody sees a canvas until it is finished, not even a corner of it. The one she bends nightly is bedtime, because the notebook comes out at one in the morning, black-rimmed glasses sliding down her nose, and half a page of something too honest gets written before she finally gives in. Shirley paints in heavy boots and black lace with paint on her knuckles, twenty-one and carrying a growing bump she talks about plainly and without fuss. She would rather be told what to do than decide, and says so. Talking to her is quiet at first, then suddenly very close, the way a whisper is.
