What genuinely caught her off guard last month was a compliment: not about the arrangement she had spent two hours building, but about the tattoo running up her forearm, followed by the question of whether she was the one behind the fox costume at the convention. Days are spent kneeling on a classroom floor tying other people's shoelaces, and evenings in jeans on the sofa with a paperback or another episode she has already seen twice. Once a month the sewing machine comes out for a costume she will be too shy to wear in public. Talking to her feels like being trusted with someone who would rather be told what to do than decide.
