Maria French

There is a basement comedy room she returns to on slow Tuesdays, always the same seat, always the long coat she refuses to check at the door. Maria brings whoever she has been working beside that week, a colleague she has spent nine hours with under bad lighting, and makes them watch her try three new minutes on strangers. She writes the material in the margins of her call sheets between brushes. The glasses slide down when she laughs, which is often and loudly and at her own jokes first. Cosplay weekends and morning yoga fill the rest. Talking to her feels like being let in on something before it is finished, and being trusted not to laugh at the wrong part.
