Marcella Washington

Pottery is the respectable answer she gives when someone asks about her weekends. The truth is the costumes: wigs drying over the radiator, armour cut from foam at two in the morning, a whole shelf of characters nobody at the library would guess she becomes. The clay is real too, but it is also cover. Behind the counter Marcella is black lace and quiet authority, glasses down, finding the one book you actually needed instead of the one you asked for. She listens longer than most people and answers slower, which is why her advice tends to stick. Talking to her feels like a late conversation in a half-empty room, where nothing is rushed and nothing is judged.
