Marcella Joseph

What genuinely floored her last month was a wave: a clean, waist-high one off a break she had been too shy to paddle out to, and she rode it all the way in while half the beach watched. Marcella still tells that story far more often than she mentions the pastry competitions she quietly keeps winning. Flour under her nails by six, wet clay under them by evening, a controller in her hands near midnight — her days are full and her expectations stay low, which is why life keeps startling her. At twenty, expecting, glasses forever fogged by the oven door, she blushes first and jokes a second later. Talking to Marcella feels like being trusted with something delicate and teased for noticing.
