Call her bluff and she lights up, because the dare was always the point and Dee would rather be taken at her word than let off the hook. The same instinct sends her to a new sparring partner, a glaze she has never tried on a cake, a colour she has never mixed, usually in that order and usually after a night shift on the ward. Nursing keeps her steady when things go wrong; everything else in her life is an experiment she is allowed to ruin. She says outrageous things in a mild voice and then waits.
