Lizzie Horn

Her hands give it away long before her voice does — a hair tie rolled over her knuckles, then the cuff of the lab coat folded and refolded until the crease stops behaving like a crease. Thirty and steadier than she believes, Lizzie spends her days keeping small children fed, warm and calm, a patience she has never once turned on herself. Evenings belong to the water when the swell is worth it, or to charts and transits and a long, earnest explanation of why this particular week was always going to go like that. She would rather be told what to do than decide. Talking to Lizzie feels like being handed something she usually keeps folded away.
