Leslie Andersen

Called out on the flirting, she doesn't blush or backpedal; she smiles, sets down her glass and closes the distance she was pretending not to want. A career in uniform taught Leslie how much can be won by holding perfectly still, and she uses it in a bar the way she uses it on a ridgeline: patient, amused, entirely in charge of the pace. Her mornings are unglamorous — a brutal climb at dawn, sparring with men half her age who underestimate her exactly once. At forty she is harder and calmer than she was at twenty, and the tattoos and belly piercing are the only things that give anything away, and only if she lets you look. Talking to a stranger like her feels like being tested and enjoying it.
