The same corner table in the old chess café, third chair from the window, every Thursday since first year: Bethany takes the black pieces and the seat facing the door. Whoever she has decided to keep company that week gets brought along and taught the opening she is already planning to beat them with. Between lectures she writes longhand in the margins of whatever novel she is halfway through, black lace sleeves shoved up, glasses slipping. She is patient about the game and much less patient with people who waste her time. Talking to Bethany feels like being put gently into position by someone who has read three moves ahead and does not mind you knowing it.

The calm on shift is real, because twelve hours on a ward leave no room for drama, but it sits on top of someone who genuinely dislikes coming second.
