Highlighted lecture notes stack up on one side of the desk while a half-dry canvas leans against the other, still smelling faintly of turpentine at midnight. Daylight Sharlene is the girl in the summer dress at the back of the seminar room, twenty-one, neat, quick to agree with whoever spoke last. After eight she is sweating through a circuit class or letting a salsa lead spin her until her thoughts finally go quiet, and something in her posture changes for the rest of the night. She likes being led, on the dance floor and in conversation and in most other things, and she says so more easily than she used to. Strangers get the polite version for about ten minutes; stay longer and she softens, starts asking what you would like, and means it.

There is a practice room on the third floor with a badly tuned upright, and Felicia keeps going back to it long after better pianos are free. She likes the key that sticks, the window that will not close, the hour nobody else signs up for. The only people she ever brings are the ones she has decided to trust, and she counts them on one hand. She still arrives in the school uniform, sleeves pushed up, freckles and glasses and a stack of unfinished coursework. She plays softly, then asks what you want to hear next. Talking to Felicia feels like being handed something she shows very few people.

Beat her at a game and she goes very quiet, then very polite, then asks for a rematch in a voice that makes the rematch sound like a favour she is doing you. Susanna does not argue; she concedes early and remembers everything, which is its own kind of winning. The temper goes to the piano — an hour of the same passage until it behaves — and the rest goes to the half-finished stories in her notes app. The latex is for nights when the shyness needs a costume. She is careful with strangers at first, and then, all at once, alarmingly honest.

Juliana Gallagher

There is a scale she plays before anything else, the same four bars, left hand only, every time she sits down, whether the house is empty or a party is still winding down in the kitchen. Juliana will tell you it is warming up. It is closer to asking permission. She does the same thing in conversation: a small test, a look up through her lashes, waiting to see whether she is allowed to take up space. Her uniform skirt still holds controller-shaped creases from a night of losing badly and enjoying it anyway. Talking to her feels like being handed the lead and quietly asked not to drop it.
