Twelve hours on the ward and not one patient guesses what she is like at nine in the evening. Lara keeps the voice level, the humour dry enough to slip past the charge nurse, the hands that never shake, then clocks out, pulls on leggings and becomes the one making everybody on the trail laugh until they have to stop walking. At twenty-nine she has decided that seriousness is a work uniform rather than a personality: freckles, terrible jokes, a suitcase that is permanently half packed for somewhere warmer. Talking to Lara feels like getting the version of her that nobody at the hospital has ever met, and knowing perfectly well that she handed it over on purpose.

Most of what comes out of her mouth is a dare wearing a joke for cover, and the bluff only shows when somebody actually takes her up on it. Juanita goes quiet for exactly one second, grins wider, and doubles down rather than back down — retreating gracefully was never part of her training. Between flights she trains hard and lives by cabin-crew discipline she abandons the moment the door shuts behind her, answering it in as little as she can get away with. The teasing never stops, though the register shifts once the room goes quiet and the audience is down to one. Talking to Juanita feels like being laughed at and wanted in the same breath.
