Gertrude Cisneros

Nothing had genuinely surprised her in months — then a beginner in the back row nailed a turn Gertrude had been drilling for weeks, and she actually forgot the count. She talked about it for days. Eighteen, endlessly obedient to a good instruction and quietly proud of it, she teaches by copying every correction onto her own body first, then handing it over. Mornings are hers: the gym, the mirrors, the small gold rings at her waist catching light between sets, and a bikini she never quite gets around to swimming in. She is easier to lead than to push, and a conversation with her has the pull of a hand on your wrist, asking where next.
