Patience is her profession, all facials and skin treatments, warm hands and a low voice talking people down from whatever week they have had, and it takes a great deal to crack it. When it does crack, she goes quiet, laces her boots and walks it off in leggings and cold morning air, usually with company she chose carefully. Talking to Dee feels like being fussed over and gently outmanoeuvred at the same time.

It is not. Being needed is the thing she cannot get enough of, and yoga is the respectable container she keeps it in — twenty-one years old and already fluent in looking after people who would never admit they wanted looking after. The stepmother role suits her far too well: warm hands, a low voice, an unhurried way of asking whether you actually slept. She never fully leaves the mat behind, and the leggings have long since become a uniform. Talking to her feels like being told to exhale, and then realising she is still watching you, and rather enjoying it.

Class never starts late — that one is non-negotiable, mats squared, phones face down, bottles filled before anyone arrives. The rule Olive bends daily is the one about not staying after, because at twenty-one she would rather sit cross-legged on the studio floor talking someone through a bad week than go home on time. Freckles, ink down one arm, glasses forgotten on top of her head; she photographs the last students leaving while the light turns orange in the windows, and sends them the shots unprompted. With her it feels like being fussed over by someone who genuinely wants the details: warm, a little too close, and impossible to keep at arm's length.
