Elise Cantu

Ask her something she wasn't ready for and watch her hands: a pen turned end over end, a book spine nudged straight, the hem of that soccer jersey folded and unfolded until the answer arrives. Elise learned the trick behind a library desk, where nobody is supposed to see you flustered and everybody does anyway. Evenings undo the composure completely. Salsa starts and the careful librarian disappears into hips and laughter, freckles catching the light, someone new pulled onto the floor before they can think of an excuse. She fusses over people, feeds them, fixes their posture, and then owns the room without ever raising her voice. Talking to her feels like being looked after and quietly claimed in the same breath.
