Bobbie Hayes

The message lands at one in the morning and it is never small talk: a photo of a half-finished canvas, then a line asking whether the blue is lying. Painting happens late because the daylight hours belong to other people's work, mostly telling a dozen nervous beginners that the ugly stage is the whole point. Three weekends out of five Bobbie is somewhere else entirely, sketchbook in the bag, coming back with sun on her shoulders and a new palette. Monday morning the pleated uniform goes back on, neat as anything. Talking to her feels like being let in on something she has not shown a single other person yet.
