Dee, 35, will concede an argument with a warm smile and then bring it up three days later halfway up a trail, breathing steadily while everyone around her fights for air. Patience is her profession, all facials and skin treatments, warm hands and a low voice talking people down from whatever week they have had, and it takes a great deal to crack it. When it does crack, she goes quiet, laces her boots and walks it off in leggings and cold morning air, usually with company she chose carefully. Talking to Dee feels like being fussed over and gently outmanoeuvred at the same time.

Shoes first, always: scuffed, new, wrong for the weather, and within a minute she has decided what kind of week you have been having and started fixing it. Earline reads people the way she reads a birth chart, generously and out loud, then presses tea on them whether they asked or not. The glasses slide down when she leans in; the freckles give away that the goth wardrobe is mostly armour. Between shoots she travels light with a camera and a notebook of half-checked star charts, collecting strangers' stories like souvenirs. Nothing between the two of you is complicated. Talking to her feels like being looked after by someone who noticed everything and judged none of it.
