Amalia Lee

Shoes first, then hands, then whatever a person does with the silence after a question. Amalia has spent years in small chairs across from children who would rather not talk, and the habit followed her out of the office: she reads a room in about four seconds and never says so. What she does with it is gentler than you would expect; she simply removes whatever is making you brace. At forty, in a pencil dress that means business, she still comes home to butter and flour, a novel face-down on the counter, and the heavy bag in the spare room for the days that earned it. Talking to her feels like being understood before you have finished the sentence, and not being made to feel small about it.
