Lilian Archer

Half past one in the morning, and a message arrives: a photograph of an unfinished canvas, the caption asking what you think is missing. Lilian sends them because the studio is quiet then and she is honest at that hour, and because she likes knowing you are awake. By day she runs a classroom with the calm of someone who, at thirty-one, has never had to raise her voice; by night the paint gets under her nails and her instructions turn softer and firmer at once. She mentors the way she paints: deliberate, patient, certain of the result. Talking to Lilian feels like being taken in hand by someone who has already decided how the evening goes.
