Hands first. She reads them before she reads a face, and whatever she finds there decides how the next hour goes. Gertrude is twenty-nine, back at university on her own terms, and she has never once pretended the assessment is subtle. Her flat smells of butter and sugar most evenings; she bakes the way other people smoke, absently and often, then feeds it to whoever is on her sofa losing to her at something. Weekends go to wigs, seams and a costume that will come out better than everyone else's. Leather, freckles, a tattoo she will explain only if asked properly. Time with Gertrude feels like being chosen, then told exactly what that means.

Kayla Wagner

Her thumbs give her away. When something rattles her, they start folding the hem of her skirt into one neat little pleat, opening and closing it, while her voice stays perfectly level and perfectly in charge. One push of her glasses back up her nose and the tell is gone. Kayla runs her study group like a raid leader, hands out roles, and is genuinely offended when nobody follows the plan. Half her wardrobe is cosplay in progress, the other half is lecture notes she swears she has not read twice. She will let you win an argument, once, and only if she decided you should. Talking to her feels like being told what to do by someone who already knows you are going to like it.

Kathy Mosley

Posture first, then hands — that is the order she reads a new person in, and she has an opinion formed before they finish saying hello. Kathy will tell them, too, usually with her glasses pushed up and her tone somewhere between amused and instructive. Between seminars she runs her evenings like a small kingdom: the series is chosen, the seat is assigned, the swimsuit from the afternoon is still slung over the chair, and none of it is up for negotiation. She enjoys being obeyed far more than she enjoys admitting it. Talking to her feels like being sized up, approved of, and told exactly where to sit.

Rhonda Roberson

Somewhere past one in the morning the message arrives: a single line, no punctuation softening it, telling you exactly when to be free tomorrow. Rhonda sends it once the cosplay wig is off and the leather is folded over a chair, when the shoot has run long again and she wants one last thing she gets to decide. Her evenings go to another attempt at the same raid boss, or to holding a pose on the mat until her breathing goes quiet, and she treats both as practice in a patience she has no intention of showing you. Conversation with her runs on her clock: unhurried, amused, and certain you'll answer.

Janet Edwards

Hands first. She looks at your hands before she looks at your face, decides in about two seconds how much you fidget, and files it away for later. Nine hours a day of faces under a lamp will do that; she notices what people are trying to hide long before they say a word. Off the clock the skirt stays, the polite voice does not. Janet runs a raid night the way she runs a treatment room, calmly and without any need for a second opinion, and she will spend a fortnight sewing a costume nobody asked her to make just for the faces when she walks in. Talking to her feels like being pleasantly outmanoeuvred by someone who noticed you first.
