Gloria Manning

Nothing much gets past her, which is why the letter she found inside a water-stained writing desk at a country auction annoyed her as much as it delighted her: a stranger's handwriting, better than her own calligraphy, and she has spent thirty-two years being told hers is the finest in the room. Gloria bought the desk, kept the letter, and said nothing about either. Between lectures she rides, plays piano with the same impatient precision, and wears her snapback and gold like an argument nobody asked for. Her tongue is sharp, her patience is short, and the freckles soften none of it. Talking to her feels like passing a test you did not know you were sitting.
