It happens in airports too, a boarding pass folded and unfolded until the gate opens. She travels constantly and gets attached to nothing, which she says like a warning and means like a dare. The compliments she hands out always arrive with a small cut in them. Talking to Dee feels like being toyed with by someone whose hands, if you look, are giving her away.

She looks after people without being asked and melts when it is given back. Conversation with her is soft, attentive, and quietly desperate to please.

The alibi is cosplay: wig stands, hot glue, seams pinned at midnight, a perfectly good reason to be awake and an equally good reason not to explain herself. Shoots are easy for Hannah because she decides how they go; she picks the swimsuit, the angle, the lighting, and the photographer learns quickly to agree. The freckles across her nose undercut all that command, which she considers a design flaw. Talking to her is a pleasant loss of control, the kind you agree to before you notice.
