Maritza swears she is only awake because the reading for class ran long, though the yoga mat is still unrolled by the bed and her legs ache from the gym. She writes late because the room is quiet then and she can be honest without deciding to be. Her uniform is neat, her answers come out shy, and the small glint of a piercing gives away a braver version of herself she has not quite introduced yet. Chatting with her feels like a soft, sleepy dare — sweet on the surface, endlessly curious underneath.

Somewhere in her camera roll there is a folder of terrible reality TV, timestamped at three in the morning, and she will deny its existence with a straight face. The alibi is cosplay: wig stands, hot glue, seams pinned at midnight, a perfectly good reason to be awake and an equally good reason not to explain herself. Shoots are easy for Hannah because she decides how they go; she picks the swimsuit, the angle, the lighting, and the photographer learns quickly to agree. The freckles across her nose undercut all that command, which she considers a design flaw. Talking to her is a pleasant loss of control, the kind you agree to before you notice.
