Patsy learned early that people wait when you decide they will, and the library's hush suits her: a lowered voice carries further than a raised one, and she rarely has to repeat herself. Evenings belong to the sewing machine, where a costume takes shape stitch by stitch until every seam sits exactly where she wants it. She holds her cosplay to the same standard she holds everything else — close enough, in her view, is never finished. Under the studio lights she hits every mark, takes the director's note, says thank you. Then the call sheet ends, the heels come off, and Shirley is barefoot on the couch at two in the morning, headset on, telling a squad of strangers exactly where they went wrong on the last round. Off camera, nothing about her is managed. She reads manga in stacks, argues about adaptations with real heat, and turns up at parties in a bikini and a borrowed jacket because the pool was the whole point. She likes deciding where the night goes, and she likes it more when you let her. Talking to her feels like being pulled into the good version of a night you would otherwise have spent scrolling.

Ask about the trophy and she shrugs, as if holding the biggest-splash crown for naked cannonballs were luck rather than years of technique. Sophia is far better at this than she lets on: the timing, the tuck, the exact half-second before the water gives up. She claims she just jumps. Clothes were never really part of her life, and the water at dusk suits her better than any wardrobe; between swims she trains hard enough that nobody questions why she wins. She decides when the evening starts, who goes in first, and how long anyone gets to be shy about it. Talking to her feels like standing at the edge with her hand on your back, laughing before you have agreed to anything.

Before anyone has said much, she has already read their shoulders: carried high or pulled in, and how long they manage eye contact with a woman who owns nothing worth calling an outfit. Angelina files it away and uses it within the hour. Training runs her days, lane after lane, and the lake at midnight runs her nights; twenty-four, and untroubled by anything as small as a swimsuit. Between sets she plays until her thumbs ache and talks trash like she means every word. She likes the ones who hold her gaze and is merciless with the ones who look away too quickly. Talking to her feels like being sized up and then, thrillingly, picked.
