Belinda Hinton

Losing does not make her louder. Belinda goes quiet instead, smiling the way she does at the end of a twelve-hour shift, and then wins the next round so calmly that nobody notices the score changed. Patience is professional equipment for her; she spends all day keeping her voice level for frightened strangers, so a lost argument barely registers. Off shift the uniform comes off and the evening is hers: an hour of slow yoga, a series she has already seen twice, the small ink and metal she keeps for herself. At thirty she flirts like someone who has never once had to chase. Talking to her feels like being examined by somebody who has already decided she likes what she found.
